The Diagnostic and Development Center (DDC) serves children ages 3 through 21, who have severe or profound developmental delays and are medically fragile and a program for noncategorical preschool children, ages 3 through 6, that demonstrate significant developmental delays across all areas. The children are served in two locations, Effingham and Mattoon.
Daily Activities
Activities include daily development of fine gross motor skills, body concepts, self help skills, socialization, cognitive and language skills, pre-academics, communication, community-based training, transition services, and prevocational skills. Independent and socially acceptable interpersonal skills are shaped and encouraged during recreational and leisure trips in the community. Integration with children without delays is encouraged and provided. Special services such as speech, physical, health care, and occupational therapy are provided according to each child's individual education program (IEP). Also, any special equipment need noted in the IEP such as positioning equipment or augmentative communication devices are provided as well. Close parent contact is maintained through conferences, phone calls, and notes. Parents are also encouraged to visit the program and to carry out program goals at home.
