The term Hearing Impairment includes all degrees of hearing loss from hard of hearing to deaf. This means that the hearing loss prevents full awareness of environmental sounds and spoken language, thus, limiting normal language acquisition. EIASE provides central programs for preschool through high school at Carl Sandburg, Jefferson Elementary, the Middle and High School in Charleston. Direct service to students is provided by itinerant teachers. Through consultation with regular teachers, staff assist students to be fully included in the regular setting in their home schools. Possible eligibility for hearing impairment programming is determined through a case study evaluation and multi-disciplinary staff conference. If the student is eligible, based on functional ability in conjunction with the severity of the hearing loss, then an IEP is developed and placement decisions are made based on the IEP. |
