School Social Workers are involved in providing services to all students to help make education a positive and rewarding experience.
Evaluations
The first priority of service from this group involves the evaluation of students to determine their need for special education services. Case study evaluations include several domains which may be assessed by PPS staff. School Social Workers are responsible for the social developmental study including an assessment of cultural background and adaptive behavior. School Social Workers frequently gather infromation for the medical history and current health status. They may complete the interview with the student, the review of academic history and the assessment of the learning environment. Together the PPS staff gathers a great deal of the information the IEP team needs to make appropriate recommendations for students.

Counseling
SSW staff may work directly with students, either individually or in groups to improve the quality of the students' educational experience. Social skills training, conflict resolution, behavior management and personal counseling may be provided to both regular education students and special education students as outlined in their IEPs. Requests for services may come from teachers, administrators, parents, educational support staff, community agency personnel and others including the student.
    Collaboration

The SSW staff collaborate with parents and school personnel about many topics, including academic, social and behavior problems. They facilitate communication between the home and the school promoting parent participation in the educational process. SSW personnel may provide inservice on a variety of issues to school staff, parent and community groups. Some topics may include general special education procedures, modifications for special students, behavior management techniques, substance abuse, peer relationships, self-esteem, motivation, and ADHD, as well as others.

Crisis Team
This group participates in Crisis Team activities as requested throughout the cooperative. The Crisis Team responds to traumatic situations in the districts when requested by district administration. Typically this follows a sudden death or other significant event. Team members trained in working with people in crisis are available to assist students and staff in coping with these situations.
